Security Basics: RE: LInksys router BEFSR41 dead... anything i can do?

RE: LInksys router BEFSR41 dead... anything i can do?

Item 1: Linksys phone support staff are of widely inconsistent quality.
I doubt that your router is dead. More likely is that the config was
reset to factory defaults (LAN IP=192.168.1.1, password=admin). Test:
plug a PC configured for DHCP into a LAN port and see if it gets
assigned an IP address. Check the default gateway configured via DHCP,
and point your web browser at that IP address.

Item 2: I'm not sure, but I believe the answer to this is YES, you can
flash most Linksys routers via a separate utility program. However, if
you cannot communicate to/through the router, I doubt that this would
succeed.

Item 3: I am not aware of any 3rd-party firmware for the BEFSR41. This
model does not use open source software, and the proprietary firmware
code is not published.

Quite frankly, these devices are cheap enough to be disposable, which is
apparently how Cisco/Linksys treats them.
