mysql.sock should be created when mysql is started. First, make sure there
is no mysqld processes running...there should be no pid file in that
directory and you should have a symlink in tmp that points to
/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock.  Then start mysqld and it should create the
mysql.sock file...if it doesn't ...there is an error file in that directory
that may give you more info about what is going on.
