Security Basics: Documentation for Password Cracker - John

List, 

Do any of you guys have expertise using John along with PWdump for
windows local and AD? Is there a step-by-step documentation that I can
find some where? I googled for a clear documentation, but couldn't
find any thing good. I have not used this tool in the past. Looks
little confusing. If any of you know a better approach that you have
followed in the past, please let me know.
