'CAC' file format

I recently came across CAC files used to import root CAs from DoD PKIs.  These binary CAC files import just fine into 
Firefox and IE certificate stores.

What format are they? I want to see the information in these root certificates.  I have tried all the combinations and 
permutations of 'openssl -text ...'
with x509 PEM DER PFX etc. and all have resulted in conversion errors.
