Hello Michael,
'dd' is offcourse the first choice for bit to bit copying. However
there are many derivatives of 'dd' utility namely:
1. dcfldd: An enhanced version of GNU dd with features useful for
forensics and security
More Info: http://dcfldd.sourceforge.net/
2. dd_rescue: A tool similar to dd, but unlike dd it will continue
reading the next sector, if it stumbles over bad sectors it cannot
read.
More Info: http://www.garloff.de/kurt/linux/ddrescue/
3. rdd: Rdd is robust with respect to read errors and incorporates
several other functions: MD5 and SHA-1 hashing, block hashing, entropy
computation, checksumming, network transfer, and output splitting.
More Info: http://sourceforge.net/projects/rdd
4. sdd: Another dd-like tool. It is supposed to be faster in certain situations.
Besides this, there are many commercial tools to carry out bit by bit
copying of data. Paraben's Forensic Replicator from Paraben
Corporation is one such utility.
