Mike,
Look at Helix(google it). It contains dd and some interesting ways to use it.
Download the iso , burn it to disk and run it on a live windows
system, from there you can review the documentation. It is a good
exercise at a minimum.
FTK Imager from the AccessData website is also a free useful utility.
