Though they are in elementary school, kids today are computer savvy. My 10 year old daughter in when 7 received extra credit in school for helping the computer lab teacher teach the other students in the class how to use a PC. Though she has been programming since age 5, GOOGLE "toon+talk", she may be the exception to the rule. If you have any old hardware afoot, which you may, Linux as a gateway router could be an option.
