however, most of my clients plan to write their firewall off over 2-3
years which means that they expect a steady stream of patches and
upgrades in the meantime.

Interesting point to ponder. Somehow I expect regular patches, upgrades,
and strong support out of free software, but have never come to expect
it from commercial vendors. Since I don't expect it, I don't plan on it,
and it always makes me pause and re-think when other people base plans
on the availability of such support.

The really fascinating thing is that I continue in this behavior even
though personal experience with BSDI in one setting and with V-One in
another both showed me that good vendors do give superb support.

I'm just blind in that whole area of vendor interaction, some how.
