Whats wrong with PGP? If its just cost then check out GNUPG
(www.gnupg.org).

Secure email is pretty much just S/MIME (using X509 certs) and PGP at the
moment with some other lightweight contenders.

For data and file encryption I tend to just roll my own using Java + JCE if
I don't use GNUPG.
