Anything from a bridge (layer2) to hogwash (layer7) are simply access
control devices operating at different OSI layers with different techniques.
Most security products can be viewed generically as:
Privacy (Encryption)
Authentication
Access Control
Information Integrity
Non-Repudiation
Logging
