I think the more important point to be maintained is that this is a 
Jabber server.
Interesting note: It's rdns is toolbar.google.com, but the jabber can be 
found at talk.google.com:5222.

Google supporting Jabber would be nice. However, I've been unable to add
contacts using talk.google.com (with gmail.com addresses) via my
standard Jabber server. They've been unable to add me too.

Is it possible that Google is running the only public Jabber server that
doesn't interoperate with other Jabber servers? That sounds more like
the 'embrace and extend' of Microsoft than the 'Don't be Evil' of
Google...

I hope it's only for a very brief beta period if that's the case, but in
the meantime, Google Talk is just another proprietary messaging system.
