Profiling Hackers..

Are there any organizations that profile hackers and hacker
groups? 

For instance, when a particular hacker is caught, would it be
useful to compare this data to other data security crimes?
This way we could link the guilty party to other crimes.

Has anyone used a Honeypot for this type of forensic work?
