Subject: Utopia FttH story old - and now bogus
David, for IP if you wish
I wonder why Mr Bennett decided to base his scathing mail about
the Utopia fiber project on a newspaper article of last April 21 from
a newspaper that, how to say this, is not known to be unfriendly to
opponents of that project. Since April 21 out of the 11 pledging cities
10 decided to continue supporting. So the big news to the paper on
May 15 was that one city decided to support otherwise (see link 1).
Said opponents made sure that Utopia had to go through an time
consuming epic battle, with its roll out scheme suffering.
Next a US Federal funding for this project inexplicably took some
more years than normal between grant and paying out.See the great
wiki on Utopia. 2) Another rich source of honest (and where appropriate:
critical) information is Jesse's blog Freetopia. 3)
In short: Utopia is a project that purposely was mangled, strangled,
shot at etc. Still it is flourishing and supported - and this August
a new roll out phase starts.
If you allow me, being from a city that actively financed the birth of
the US of A, Mr Bennett's take of Utopia is a bit like proclaiming
the demise of that Union after the Battle of Long Island.
A successful society is characterized by a rising living standard for its population, increasing investment in
factories and basic infrastructure, and the generation of additional surplus, which is invested in generating new
discoveries in science and technology.
