Information Security News: Gun control Web site back after hack

The Violence Protection Center, a gun-control group, is back online
after a hacker stole its Internet address and defaced its Web site
with pro-gun slogans.

The Washington-based group had not been able to receive e-mail nor
modify its site since Sunday. Web site visitors were redirected to a
different page containing obscenities and pro-gun slogans.

Network Solutions, based in Herndon, Va., was alerted Tuesday to the
problem and fixed it. Web addresses are stolen frequently, according
to a spokesman, as hackers use faked e-mail or false letterhead to
fool Network Solutions into linking the Web address with a different
server.

While hijacked, a colleague sent an e-mail to a VPC address only to
have the hacker respond. Information in the e-mail pointed to the
University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

VPC spokeswoman Naomi Seligman said the group was working with the FBI
in an effort to catch the culprit.
