Information Security News: Hackers become first charged under new law

A group of three people were arrested Thursday on suspicion of
illegally obtaining IDs and passwords and using them to invade Web
sites belonging to a university and a tourism association.

It is the nation's first bust of a hacker group on suspicion of
violating the law on illegally accessing computers.

Arrested were Yasuharu Miyamoto, 39, of Hiroshima, Junko Kato, 42, of
Nagoya and Shunsuke Oba, 23, of Hachioji, western Tokyo.

A joint investigation team comprising the Aichi, Hiroshima, Miyagi and
Akita prefectural police headquarters and the Metropolitan Police
Department has been investigating allegations of illegal computer
access incidents by a group of hackers.

Investigators believe that Miyamoto used a personal computer and an ID
and a password stolen from a university student to hack into a Web
page set up by the student during his university class in the Chugoku
region.

Police suspect that Kato, a company employee, and Oba, a university
student, stole an ID and a password from the manager of a Web site
belonging to the Iwahara tourism association in Niigata Prefecture,
and accessed the site.

The three have reportedly admitted to the charges.

In mid-August, Aichi prefectural police received an anonymous e-mail
tipping them off to computer hacking.
