Site urges attacks on govt home pages

A Chinese-language Web site that encourages visitors to attack the
official Web sites of the Japanese government's agencies and business
enterprises has appeared recently, it was learned Friday.

Home pages of about 70 precision equipment manufacturers, hospitals
and universities have been attacked by hackers who probably responded
to the Web site's call, according to the National Police Agency.

According to NPA investigations, messages in Chinese have been
appearing on the attacked Web sites criticizing the Nanjing Massacre,
which allegedly was perpetrated by soldiers of the Imperial Japanese
Army before World War II.

This was the first case of Chinese-language hacking since central
government Web sites were attacked by hackers between January and
February last year.

According to the NPA, the Chinese-language Web site first appeared on
Feb. 16. The site urged visitors to launch simultaneous attacks on
Japanese government and private Web sites. It also contained names of
several dozen companies that the site claims have already been
infiltrated by hackers, investigators said.

NTT East Corp. and the Hiroshima Prefectural Hospital are among the 70
public entities that have been attacked by the hackers.

The Web sites messages include the phrases "Down with Japanese
imperialism" and "Hail the People's Republic of China," in Chinese and
English.

The Metropolitan Police Department and other police headquarters have
been investigating the case on suspicion of violation of the law
banning illegal access to Web sites.
