Update: NEW YORK--Computer hackers disabled the Web site of the
Associated Press early on Wednesday, leaving various names such as
Benny Hill and Punisher under a banner reading "Owned by HFURY" on the
organization's home page.

The news organization said its AP.org site was hacked about 2:19 AM
ET. The site carries information about the AP's products and services.

"Only the home page for the corporate site was affected," said Jack
Stokes, a spokesman for the AP. "None of our news feeds to our
subscribers were interrupted or affected."

The company shut down the site from 4:35 AM ET to about 6:10 AM ET.

"We are still trying to determine who might have hacked the site,"
said Stokes, referring to letters "Hfury" that appeared on the site.

Dotcom Scoop, a newsgroup focused on events within the Internet and
technology sectors, reported on its own site early Wednesday that the
vandals were a Brazilian group which claims responsibility for a total
of 134 Web site defacements.

The incident follows other high-profile electronic break-ins,
including two in January affecting Web sites of software giant
Microsoft and an attack last October that tapped some of that
company's secrets.

U.S. government Web sites and the Vatican radio Web site have also
been the object of such cyber vandalism in the recent past.
