Nmap Development: Number of retransmissions

Hi,

my main field of action is the verification of internal firewall rule
sets and most of the time I am very close to the actual equipment (as
opposed to doing scans over the Internet).

Monitoring tiresome packets being dropped by the firewall (the it's
supposed to be), I wonder if I could restrict the number of
retransmissions for an -sS or -sT? 

What is the default for the number of retransmissions? What do think
about an option for restriction of this value?
