Perl-style regular expression

hello,everyone
What is  Perl-style regular expression ?    Perl-style regular expression  is the  pattern  of the file 
nmap-service-probes ,used to determine whether the response received matches the service given in the previous 
parameter . for example,  m/^.\0\0\0\n(4\.[-.\w]+)\0...\0/.
but I don't understand?  i can not to parse it.
