Nmap Development: nmap universal binary

Hello,

Ive been trying to create a universal binary of the nmap package,  
following both apple's instructions at:

http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Porting/Conceptual/ 
PortingUnix/compiling/chapter_4_section_3.html

And the addendum provided by http://www.cocoadev.com/index.pl? 
HowToBuildUniversalLibraries. The GNU Hello world program produce a  
proper universal binary when using the above instructions, however I  
only get a Mach executable following the same procedure for nmap. The  
configure script proceeds succesfully afaics, setting both ppc and  
i386 but after make I always end up with just a Mach executable binary.

Any suggestions?
