Not all Linux distributions are created equal. It is /very/ unlikely
that a Makefile provided by someone else would work on your machine.
This is the main reason for having autoconf in the first place.
When you do a ./configure a config.log file is created. I'm sure if
you posted the log to the list someone here would be willing to look at
it to see what is going on.
