I definitely think it could be useful to do that.  You can find the
OSAssist code in /nmap-dev.  I'm afraid it isn't written in Lisp, but
David (who came up with the idea and mentored SoC student Michael in
part to write it) has found it to be a great help already.  Maybe it
could be extended to handle the needs of both OS detection and version
detection.
