Reply back to the list with what version of nmap and what version of windows (2k, xp, vista). Might help narrow it
down.

I was using zenmap (updated as of last week) and tried to to "quick scan
plus" on target 192.168.1-254. When I hit scan I get that dreaded windows
"application has encountered a problem and needs to close" message.
Running it from the command line I get the same thing. The command was:
nmap -T4 --version-light -sV -F -O 192.168.1.1-254
