Hello everyone, there are a few things I didn't get a chance to mention in
yesterday's announcement:
1) I'll bet you didn't know that some of your fellow Nmap hackers
are also talented artists! I've put up some cool contributed
banners and buttons at
http://www.insecure.org/nmap/index.html#propaganda . Feel free
to use these for linking to Nmap from your site :). More graphic
contributions are always welcome.
2) I forgot to include the URL for Nmap in my last mail. It is
http://www.insecure.org/nmap/ . Linux/x86 users with RPM
can download
http://www.insecure.org/nmap/dist/nmap-2.3BETA4-1.i386.rpm
and then install it with:
rpm -vhi nmap-2.3BETA4-1.i386.rpm
if you have already installed an earlier Nmap RPM, you
should upgrade instead, with the command:
rpm -vhU nmap-2.3BETA4-1.i386.rpm
3) Zach <key_at_aye.net> has made many updates to NmapFE since the
version that is currently included with Nmap 2.3BETA4. If you
are using NmapFE, you should probably pick up the latest
warez at http://a.linuxbox.com/nmapfe.html .
4) Ian Zepp <icszepp_at_islc.net> has created another cool front
end to Nmap called Kmap. This offers various data views
(Tree form, table form, raw Nmap output form), many convenience
features, and Qt/KDE integration. Check it out at
http://www.islc.net/~icszepp/kmap/index.html
5) Some spammers may have been harvesting the Nmap page for
email addresses. If you get such spam, remember to give
them hell! Nmap them, use traceroute/whois to find their
ISPs and complain to abuse@, etc. If they give out
800/888/877 numbers, that means they WANT your opinions
regarding their spam so much that they are willing to PAY MONEY
to hear what you have to say! If you are feeling generous,
call up several times to offer your opinions :). If enough
anti-spammers call, their box will fill up and prevent real
customers from leaving a message. If they are local to you,
pay them a visit.
7) A lot of Windows users tell me that they wish to use Nmap, but
they don't want to give up Windows & WinNT because that is what all
their video games run on. First of all, Linux now supports Quake,
Doom, Civilization: Call To Power, and many other top quality games.
Further, you can set up your system dual-boot, allowing you to boot
into Windows when you are tired of productive work. But if you still
insist on running Nmap from Windows, there are a number of Web
gateways that will do the scanning for you (some cost money
though). See http://www.insecure.org/nmap/index.html#projects for
several examples.
Cheers,
- -F
