Nmap Hackers,
You may recall that I co-authored a hacker fiction book last year
named Stealing the Network: How to Own a Continent. We (Myself, FX,
Joe Grand, Jay Beale, Kevin Mitnick, etc.) applied actual security
techniques to fictional yet realistic scenarios. My tale, "Return on
Investment" was (and still is) available for free at

I'm pleased to announce that Syngress has now released a sequel, "How
to Own an Identity". While I was too busy with Nmap to participate,
Nmap contributer Brian Hatch did. He's the guy who put SSL into Nmap
version detection, among a dozen or so other patches. His story is my
favorite of the new book. It is full of wry humor that security/unix
geeks will get, and also creative/amusing ideas for defending and
attacking systems. I thought you guys would like it since it
discusses Nmap, Ethereal, packet crafting, port knocking, filesystem
encryption, SSL MITM attacks, kernel module hacking, etc. It also
stands on its own even if you don't read the rest of the book. So I
asked Syngress if I could post that chapter for free, and they agreed.
