OpenVAS: Ubuntu 12.04: can't start GSAD Web service (login always fails)

Hello,

After following the instructions for installation OpenVAS from binaries (instructions posted here
http://www.openvas.org/install-packages.html#openvas_ubuntu_obs

everything sets up OK, but attempts to login via
https://localhost:9392

result in

"Login failed. OMP service is down" message.

OS is Ubuntu 12.04, 64-bit, all the latest updates applied. I have found many references to this error, but not a 
single solution. Is there any way to run OpenVAS installed from binary packages?

openvas-check-setup tells, after printing sheets of messages:

"It seems like your OpenVAS-5 installation is OK"
