Agreed. I don't believe the location of the points on the graph are
representative of direction compared to the phone. I believe it is based
on signal strength only and those points just move closer to the center.
It's been a while since I've used this though and don't currently have
it available to test.

It can't. The display only looks good and cannot actually provide
direction.

I don't believe this was answered. I believe you're thinking of
WiFiFoFum and it can only be installed on jailbroken devices. Here is

Ye that looks like it.

How can it do that from a single device?

Slightly off topic but something I'm curious about, there is an
iPhone app I saw that shows APs on a radar type screen to indicate
what direction each is away from you. I know you can't do this
accurately with a single radio but the person showing me swore that
it was usually spot on.

Anyone any idea how they would be doing it?

I'm thinking of getting a Samsung Galaxy S4, Android version that
Google recently announced. Do these apps require root or just

I agree w/Larry -- Check out WiFi Analyzer for Android.

Brian,

We talk about this quite a bit in SANS SEC617. I hate to say
it, but I
think you are correct on the iPhone side, mostly due to the fact
that
the wireless drivers are "less than open". To my knowledge,
monitor mode
support does not exist on non-jailbroken iDevices (I'm not sure
about
jailbroken ones).

My solution? Go Android. I picked up a Nexus 7 and use the
following
tools frequently:

Kisbee - Zigbee sniffer (for use with 3rd party hardware)
Pcap Capture - Monitor mode WiFi capture with a specific ALFA
wireless
card and OTG cable
WiFiFoFum - Rogue AP locator
WiFi Analyzer - Kismet-like wireless discovery
WiGLE WiFi Wardriving - Kismet-like wireless discovery
Cloudshark - Cloud based wireshark for analyzing pcaps

Hope that helps.

Have a great day,
