Penetration Testing: Offtopic: SSL 3.0 Client Authentication

Has anyone got a more readable explanation of how Client
Authentication works in SSL 3.0?

The specification is great if your trying to program it, but
whilst great on the steps is a bit thin on the "Big
Picture".

Specifically I want to know; 
What products support it.
What the authentication proves, and how this is used to
secure the conversation.
