Penetration Testing: Fax to EMail Gateway

Has anyone experience with a Fax to Email Gateway? I'm especially interested to the threats when dialing in from the Fax site? Is it somehow possible to access the Ethernet side of the Gateway? Could the Fax protocol be exploited?

Any links or hints are appreciated.
