eTrust's InoculateIT Anti-virus scanner (4.x, 6.x, maybe 7) use Windows
Messenger to alert the user that a virus was detected. This will not stop
the program from running, but there is no other explicit notification of the
virus unless you look at scan details, the system event log, or the alert
server logs (if you utilize that).

Many print notifications use Messenger to deliver failed/successful print

I have shut down Messenger on a machine or two, and had no ill effects.
These would be normal business workstation / web services developer

Subject: Which software requires the Messenger Service?

lo all,
I would like to compile a list of software which relies on the
Messenger Service for inter process communication. I believe
some backup software packages due but i'm not entirely positive.
Has anyone ever shut the service off and had other services
complain? Thanks a lot for your input and if I get enough I will
post a list of the packages on my site sh0dan.org.
Thank you,
