Guys - thanks for you assistance so far. I think i havent been very
clear in the way I asked the question. So I will attempt to clear
things up a little <blush>

In my role, we support about a dozen remote sites (connected via 2meg links)

During a recent scan of a subnet, using NMap, I got lots of results,
each workstation had about 3-5 open ports but one workstation simply
said "Rewire the server room" and its this line that concerns me

I have looked through the source of NMap, hoping to find out what
trips it but to no avail

I was wondering if anyone has come accross this before?

Do you still have the raw output of the scan against that host, to add some substance to this guessing game ?

i can imagine that you ran an -sV scan and it returned the output of port 17: "Quote of the Day" service or something
like that.

Ps. its 'normal' for support people to shoot first and then ask what happened after the engineers put out the fire

Hence the custom among the Scythians of plucking out a cynic's eyes to improve his vision.
