Zach,

In addition to those tools, are you familiar with Nessus? It might be helpful in your penetration testing since it keeps an up-to-date database of exploits.

Hi,

Do following steps to configure your virtual VMWare
network:

1. Set a private IP address to the virtual network
adapter which will be found at control pannel> network
connections. Set IP like 192.168.1.1 subnet mask
255.255.255.0 .. No need for a gateway.

2. Now boot the OS in VMWare, set the network adapter
in the virtual machine OS with IP address in same
range say, 192.168.1.2 subnet mask 255.255.255.0 ...
You can give gateway 192.168.1.1 if you plan to access
other networks on host OS (Note: to do this stuff you
may need to use NAT and Routing and Remote Access
running on host OS (XP), especially while accessing
internet on host OS)

3. Now ping from virtual machine to host machine IP
address 192.168.1.1. You must get a echo reply.

Now you can use Nmap to scan vitual OS from host Os or
vice-versa.

Bye,

Shreyas Zare
