Penetration Testing: USSD Security Test

I am researching on Unstructured Supplementary Services Data (USSD)
services to explore ways to perform penetration test on it at both
application (USSD) and network (GSM) layer. I would really appreciate
if you can share your experiences or thoughts on the assessment
methodology, tools, approaches etc
