subnets? 

With IPv4, active discovery is going to be difficult at best. The
simpliest solution is probably to run something like Arpwatch. It
monitors broadcasts traffic, and gives you the MAC/IP address pairing of
every detected system. The log entries will clearly show which subnets
are local.
