Facial recognition technology approved at Va. Beach
7:45 p.m. November 13, 2001
Facial recognition technology will be coming to the Virginia Beach
oceanfront.
All but one council member voted to approve the program Tuesday night.
It uses cameras to scan people on the street and in crowds and compares
faces to ones in a computer database of suspected criminals.
Support for the technology increased after the September 11 terrorist
attacks, particularly once it was learned that some of the suspected
hijackers spent time in Virginia Beach.
