You're right. I actually haven't seen a Tru64 machine in ages and was just
assuming that 5.1 was similar enough to 5.0 to make gdb run.
Querying the GNATS bug database located at

http://sources.redhat.com/cgi-bin/gnatsweb.pl

yields to open bugs (PR 237 and PR 323) in gdb that seem to indicate that
Compaq Tru64 UNIX 5.1 is not a supported platform for gdb (up to?) 5.1

Posts on the Tru64 managers mailing list (tru64-unix-managers at ornl.gov),
archive to be found at http://www.ornl.gov/its/archives/mailing-lists
indicate the same.
