Hopefully ***.***.***.*** is you hiding the IP address of the host you
want to scan.

You should grab the latest 3.93 version of nmap.

Nmap (thanks to libpcap/winpcap) doesn't really support PPP (dial-up)
links, particularly since XPsp2. (IIRC)

OK, it looks like I'm getting the same problem under Windows XP SP2.
Can someone give me a couple of hints where to look in the code base?  I
ran into this today on a laptop.  I was able to run a scan "nmap
xx.xxx.x.xxx -v -sV -p 23".  The first scan ran through clean after
running the scan several more times it failed with the message;
"
\nmap-3.93>nmap 64.139.2.219 -v -sV -p
 23
