A simple war dialer could accomplish the task.
True, but it will only find those that are currently programmed to answer an incoming call.
I have also used ISS (Internet Security Scanner) to accomplish this.
ISS uses pretty much the same technique as the mdmchk Perl script that the OP mentioned. However, Perl does NOT need to be installed on all machines, as stated by the OP...only on the system from which the script is run. And it's free, open-source, and easily modified.
