encrypting credit card data

What are some good strategies for encrypting credit card data should
you need to store it in a database for a period of time? One thing I
read suggested that each person's data should be encrypted with a key
unique to that person. How would you generate such a key and then securely
retrieve it later when you need to decrypt the data?
