What operating systems are you dealing with? If you're working with Windows, go to SysInternals.com and get a copy of the PSTools. You'll especially want a copy of psexec.exe. You can use this to run tools remotely against systems. Also, I might suggest that you learn to program WMI...I implement this in Perl, but VB or VBScript would work just as well.
