For IP/port scanning. My personal fav, Nmap. This is an open source tool,
and probably the best at it (in my opinion). There is even a version that
will run on Windows now. Just google for nmap, and download the binaries.

Also, I believe that if you are running Windows (I am assuming as you r a
newbie). Then there is a great scanner called LANguard. You used to be able
to download it and run a free trial for 30 days. Im not sure if that's still
the case though. But have a look because its easy to understand the output
of the scans with LANguard, and it runs on Windows.

My personal favourite in pen-tesing tools would have to be Nessus which runs
on Linux. And the best distribution of this (in my opinion again) would be
Knoppix STD. There are two versions of Knoppix, but the STD (Security Tools
Distribution) is the one you want. Then you have all the pen-testing tools
you want, and because it's a Live CD, you don't have to install it, just
boot from the CD and Disco!
Using Knoppix STD you have nmap, nessus, airsnort, and any other really
useful tool you could ever think of for pen-testing and scanning.

Hello all, I recently ran Angry IP Scanner to see what was on my network, so
I could get the IP of a wireless access point I use to tinker with it.
However, I found a strange thing residing at 192.168.15.2, which ran
something by Marconi called Element Manager. My network starts at
192.168.0.x, so I was wondering if this is still in the realm of a private
network (so far as IP assignment) and if anyone had any info on what exactly
this is. 

Also, I would appreciate it if some could direct me to some decent network
administration tools I can use to secure and find vulnerabilities with my
network. I am still at a 'new' level with network security and
administration (which I've been interested in for a long time, but I've just
been overwhelmed by all the information out there) and enjoy learning
whatever I can. Thanks.
