I fully support getting a box out there wherever you can, just with
the small amount of this I get to do I have been able to learn a bit,
though I look forward to the ability to have a box further outside of
a network.

In fact when I was at the 5th HOPE in NYC this past summer I saw a fun
Presentation on the use of a HoneyPot to actively attack hackers that
would try to take the Pot over. It was real fun to picture someone
sitting on the other end of the line suddenly getting shutdown and
owned. I'm sure it puts a smile on many people's faces.

have fun,
Kinnell

That is a great idea, unfortunately I don't know where to find another
location for this. I actually planned on getting a separate cable
line. I already have cable coming in so I'm not sure if they can give
me "another" line (do you know if they can do this?) Also, I may
just get a dsl line and do it that way...probably have the server on
cable and have Brighthouse increase my upload speed and have my
personal network on the dsl line (I don't consider dsl as being as
reliable as cable in my area, I've had many issues with it in past).

Definately take the advice given so far. The one piece I have not heard
yet is to run your own server somewhere seperate from work. If you can
get a box hosted somewhere, I would recommend that.

I am not an expert in the field, but I do have a personal server located
off my work network. Because it is not behind a firewall (aside from
iptables) I get to see all kinds of very interesting network traffic.
Exploring all the log entries, and what causes them is a real good intro
into network security.

Besides, the fear of having your own box hacked because it is on the
front lines is a real motivator to hone your security skills. And if
you do get hacked, you can even hone your forensic skills!

just my $0.02
