Learning Network Security Basics

Hey all.... I am a Bachelor of computers student.I am very much interested in Security.I have started reading articles,discussions,whitepapers,books etc etc related to security.But the problem is i am not able to concentrate on building the foundations for security.... Please explain me in details how to start learning abt security.. also what are compuslory skills for a security professional ? How to get hands on experience with all the stuff which is posted on internet.. Thanx a lot for my help
