RE: Internet usage and monitoring

If you're looking for web filtering as well, there are lots of companies that provide the service. mxInspect does a
really nice job in a hosted model - and its per-user costs are really cheap. For the size deployment that you've given,
web monitoring usually doesn't work because no one looks at the logs. A hosted soln with filter provides easy logs that
people might actually look at - and someone else takes care of the upkeep.

Surfcontrol. Yeah.. the license is more expensive but, you'll save a lot of cost in labor, in my experience. They
have a hosted model and an enterprise product they can deploy to your network. It's easy to deploy and there is very
good reporting (particularly in the enterprise product).

I think one of the benefits that is most oft overlooked with web filtering is the protection of the desktop users from
spyware/adware. Products like SurfControl/Websense (merging real soon) do a good job of categorizing those sites and
you'll see a dramatic decrease in the amount of time spent cleaning up that kind of stuff. I work for a small MSP and
most of our customers see web filtering save them money over time.

Subject: Internet usage and monitoring

Hello List,

I am looking for an idea/program to monitor users internet usage. Due to the
nature of the customer who requires the monitoring carried out, this program
must be able to run on a windows box and needs to be very reasonably priced
(I have no control over budget unfortunately). I am aware of programs such
as ISA server (too expensive) and squid (*nix based). Any other sugesstions
would be great.Customers network is round a bout 20 workstations that need
to be monitored, so pretty small in reality.

Looking forward to all your help.

TIA

Jono
