You made mention that VMWare isn't an option. Have you thought about VirtualBox from Sun? http://www.virtualbox.org/ I currently use it. It's very stable and allows me to test on several platforms to ensure cross platform stability. I'm currently running the Windows version, using several builds of Linux inside it.
