Unless someone has served him with a subpoena, he does not
have to submit his machine to any kind of forensics period.
My personal suggestion to him would be to contact a lawyer
and let it be know to his former employer his decision to
do so.

Irrespective of the fact of him having private information
he wishes to protect, an accusation depending on the mode
of delivery (publicly, etc.) could place him in a very odd
situation down the line with potential future employers.
I'd suggest making sure he gets counsel to avoid being
harrassed, overall to protect himself.
