Re: secure sharepoint 2010 design

Currently all internal systems, domain controllers, ERP, databases,
dns, etc... are all on the same network as all the workstations.
I am hoping to move toward changing the current environment to be
where all critical systems are behind firewalls.
I was also hoping to start with Sharepoint, since this project is
still in the design phase and nothing has really been built yet.
I understand that changing a company's way of doing things from the
last 20 years will be hard, but I want to try since my group will be
the one who might get in trouble if something did happen.
It's always security's fault even though no one wants to listen to us.
the plan would be to slowly migrate systems behind the firewall.
the firewall would be left open from any to any for a while until we
have a good understanding of what ports and services are used between
different systems.
when we're confident that we have a good list, then we can start
locking things down and only allowing ports that are needed for
communications.
Not sure if anyone's done this. but it would be nice to know what
anyone had to do to convince management and other teams of doing
something similar.
I know it could be a lost cause, but it doesn't hurt to hope for good things. :)

thanks

Frank

Hi,

The question I would ask is: do existing similar systems in your company
have a dedicated, firewalled network?

I think you'll find that somewhat more critical systems (e.g. your
domain controllers) currently sit on the same network as all your
workstations. While there is a security benefit in firewalling
sharepoint, it's a bit moot if more critical systems are not firewalled.

just wondering if anyone here has been involved with designing
sharepoint 2010 or earlier version from ground up.
the consulting people we have working on this are MS or sharepoint
people from third party and all seem to think that it's ok to leave
your whole sharepoint environment open to corporate lan.  according to
