Phone call tracing

Maybe this isn't the right forum, but does anyone know of equipment that could be used to trace anonymous or privte 
phone calls?  For example, I receive a phone call that is marked anonymous or privte on my caller id, is there some 
sort of rj45 equipment or modem that I could purchase that could be used to trace the phone call back to the actual 
number it's coming from?  Phone computer and police won't give that information, since the call is not threating, plus, 
police normally aren't that helpful with these types of issues.
