Re: build an appliance without a shell

Nothing is worse than having an appliance that has no admin access other
than the web interface. The worst experience I have ever had with a
security tool is an IDS appliance that would not give me full admin
access and even though they did have a shell refused to give us root
access on the box. The reason this was bad is the web interface would
hang forcing us to call the vendor to have a support person ssh in and
restart the service. This is not a good business model and was a
contributing factor in us dropping them.

asked the S.E. about shells - does it have one? Is there any way of getting
a full interactive shell on this thing?

I was just handed a task yesterday to build a single function "toaster"
to be hung outside the firewall on its own public IP. I have thought
about building various appliance in the past so it is not a new idea.
Building an OS from the ground up using a linux kernel is not a big
deal either. But after reading the thread from which I took the above
quote I am left with "shell == bad" therefore no shell. ???
