The author wrote up his discovery in full detail. Then he "one-way hashed" it by taking the first letter of each word and writing them in sequence. I seem to remember a while back that some unsigned bands did something similar to protect themselves from their music being duplicated by someone else, and thus loosing out on royalty profits... Making a copy of their music to tape or cd, and then mailing recorded delivery (sorry that's a UK term, not sure of the appropriate internationalism) to themselves, thus having a sealed container which was "timestamped". This could then be kept in a safe place until such time as the material was called into dispute, at which time a solicitor could open it, and it could then be used as evidence.
